Tonight the Twins face off against one of the best up and coming young pitchers in baseball in Dan Haren. Many are predicting him to blossom this season and solidify an already very strong A’s rotation. Thus far in Haren’s young major league career, he has been very tough against the Twins team holding them to a .193 AVG in 2 starts against them last season. The Twins lineup needs to step up and get at him early so that he isn’t able to settle into a groove. This is extremely important for a very quiet Twins lineup this season that saw them put up little or no offense in the final two games of the Cleveland series.
Minnesota pitcher Brad Radke starts for the Twins in what may be his final season. If this indeed is his final season, it is fitting that he start the home opener this year and that we make it a memorable one for him. Radke’s first inning woes have become well known and have plagued him for years. Radke needs to make it through a smooth first inning without giving up any home runs so that the Twins offense doesn’t have to play from behind.
Fans at the game tonight will also be treated to a pregame ceremony to honor the legendary and Hall of Fame former Twin Kirby Puckett who passed away due to complication from a stroke on March 6. A large “34” will appear on the turf in centerfield for the team’s first nine-game homestand, but Puckett will be on the minds of all players and fans all season long.
